Well yesterday was the end of Cycle 1! Blood work is the first thing the nurse does before they administer anything. Sam’s white blood cell count (WBC)was extremely low. In fact the nurse said “that’s the lowest I’ve ever seen.” His ANC (absolute neutrophil count) was 100!!! Normal is 1500+. They always give us a copy of the lab results. As I read over them I saw a “P” beside his WBC which the key code at the bottom of the sheet indicated that stood for “panic” . . . which is what I did. I had to walk away and take a time out for a few minutes. Thankfully there was a sweet lady from the lab that saw me and gave me a hug.
With his WBC and ANC that low he is at high risk for infection. They did go ahead and give him the bleomycin yesterday. The bleomycin doesn’t effect the WBC. We were advised to keep him away from sick people and anyone who has come in contact with a sick person. Also to stay away from crowds. I told him I was going to put him in a bubble! :)
Please pray that his WBC comes back up quickly so he doesn’t get sick.
